Multilocus sequence typing: accurate characterisation of bacterial diversity for public health and academic purposes
Bacterial pathogens are a major cause of morbidty and mortality throughout the world. Multilocus sequence typing has been developed as a general method of characterising genetic diversity amongst patterns. The method has several advantages including allowing comparison between different labs worldwide and allowing detailed study of the evolutionary process underlying diversity. I will describe MLST and give examples of its use in a public health setting and for evolutionary inference.

Why characterising genetic diversity matters for medical science
Genetic variation between humans has important consequences, both in terms of the prevalance of diseases and in the optimal methods for treating them. I will give an overview of the pattern of genetic differentiation in humans and how this information can be made use of in disease gene mapping and medical interventions.
