新型冠狀病毒（SARS-CoV-2）自2019年底席捲全球各地，截至2022年四月底為止，全球確診病例數已達五億一千萬以上，更造成六百多萬的死亡案例。隨著感染人數的增加，新冠病毒更演化出各式不同之變異株（variant），各國政府及研究團隊因而積極投入藥物及疫苗的開發；其中，棘蛋白（Spike protein, S）的突變對新冠病毒傳染力的影響最受科學家們關注，例如：Omicron變異株造成突破性感染。

As one of NHRI’s prestigious research units, the Immunology Research Center aims to study frontier translational research of immune-mediated diseases, explore the disease mechanisms of autoimmune disease and inflammatory diseases, and develop novel early diagnostic kits, immunotherapy, and therapeutic drugs.

在2007至2017年政府大力推展生技醫藥期間，本院成功自行推動4項藥物完成臨床前試驗與美國及台灣新藥臨床試驗許可（IND）申請，2項藥物更完成人體一期臨床試驗，也在此時培養出6位專案經理。其中在2009至2010二年間，台灣的臨床前試驗委託機構尚未達成熟階段，且本院團隊尚未有臨床前試驗的經驗，因此為了確實加值藥物成果，須委託有績優表現的機構進行臨床前試驗，藉以累積經驗並大幅促進藥物的技術移轉機會。
