NHRI has once again received full re-accreditation from the Association for the Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care (AAALAC International), a private, nonprofit organization that promotes the humane treatment of animals in science through voluntary accreditation and assessment programs. NHRI first received full accreditation in March 2015 as the 13th accredited organization in Taiwan. In order to maintain the accredited status, NHRI went through re-evaluation in 2017 and was notified of the full-accreditation recently.
The site inspectors were highly impressed by the policy and methodologies implemented to execute the “refinement” principle at NHRI in minimizing potential pain, suffering or distress of the animals used at NHRI. These include the administrative infrastructure and professional expertise of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) in governing the policy maintenance on the responsible uses of animals, the strong veterinary team in providing best of care for the animals, and the development of a zebrafish embryonic test as an alternative method to reduce the animal usage.
NHRI will continue to ensure the practice of proper humane care and welfare for the research animals in all aboratory animal facilities and resources in supporting biomedical researchers.
