(1) Mechanism and Prevention for Chronic Kidney Disease Objective:
NHRI is committed to facilitating the translation research to reduce burdens caused by end-stage renal disease (ESRD). Therefore, NHRI is soliciting study proposals for a better ESRD prevention strategy.
Background:
The prevalence and incidence of dialysis in Taiwan have been on the top of the world for more than a decade. Although several government-sponsored healthcare programs such as the diabetes pay-for-performance program, the early CKD program, and the pre-ESRD program have been effectively implemented for many years, the societal impacts incurred by ESRD have not been alleviated. Thus, a new approach is needed to solve this adverse health outcome.
Research Priority:
Study outcomes should be focused on two emerging issues related to chronic kidney disease: acute kidney injury (AKI) and chronic kidney disease of unknown etiology (CKDu).
The applicants are encouraged to adopt a multidisciplinary approach for this research, including (not limited to) recent developments in genetics, immunology, cell biology, biomarker profiling, therapeutic options, diagnosis tools, prediction models, epidemiological analysis, climate change, environmental factors, and/or artificial intelligence application.
The scope of this call should include at least 3 interrelated and integrated sub-projects to link a major pathway or target for the investigated outcomes.
Research priority of this project is to elucidate causal association in development of end-stage renal disease and/or to identify therapeutic interventions for preventing or reducing the development of dialysis in Taiwan.
(2) Mechanism and Prevention for Diabetic Complications Objective:
NHRI is committed to facilitating the translation research to reduce impacts caused by diabetic complications. Therefore, NHRI is soliciting study proposals to tackle diabetic micro- and/or macrovascular complications.
Background:
Diabetes-related cardiovascular diseases have been significantly reduced in the USA during the last decade; however, the incidence and prevalence of cardiovascular diseases and end-stage renal disease in patients with diabetes in Taiwan are still on the rise. Thus, a new approach is needed to solve these adverse health outcomes.
Research Priority:
Study outcomes should be focused on the important diabetic complications, particularly for the ones that incurred significant disease burden in Taiwan such as myocardial infarction, heart failure, and/or end-stage renal disease.
The applicants are encouraged to adopt a multidisciplinary approach for this research. The methodology may include (not limited to) recent developments in genetics, immunology, cell biology, biomarker profiling, therapeutic options, diagnosis tools, prediction models, epidemiological analysis, and/or artificial intelligence application.
The scope of this call should include at least 3 interrelated and integrated sub-projects to link a major pathway or target for the investigated outcomes.
Research priority of this project is to offer innovative strategies, through elucidating causal association in disease pathogenesis to developing therapeutic interventions, to prevent or reduce the targeted diabetic complications.
